Custom Coffee Packaging: Bags, Boxes and Gift Sets for Coffee Brands

Coffee brands have a packaging problem most other categories don’t: the primary bag has to do serious functional work – keeping roasted beans fresh against oxygen, moisture, and light – while the secondary packaging around it, especially for gift sets and holiday bundles, is judged purely on how premium it looks on a shelf or in an unboxing video.

Here is how structure and materials typically split across these two jobs, and what to think about for each.

Primary Packaging: The Bag Itself

Most roasted coffee ships in stand-up pouches with a one-way degassing valve, which lets CO2 escape as the beans off-gas after roasting without letting oxygen back in. The film needs a genuine oxygen and moisture barrier – usually a multi-layer laminate rather than a single-material film – since coffee is one of the more demanding products to package correctly from a shelf-life standpoint. A resealable zip strip is close to a default expectation now for any bag over a single-serve size.

Secondary Packaging: Boxes and Gift Sets

Where custom boxes come in is gifting, subscription unboxing, and multi-bag bundles:

  • Folding cartons with a die-cut window are common for single-bag retail packaging, letting the bag’s own branding show through while adding a more rigid, shelf-stable outer structure.
  • Rigid boxes with dividers for multi-bag gift sets and holiday bundles, where the box itself is part of the gifting experience rather than just a shipping container.
  • Printed mailer boxes for subscription coffee brands, where the unboxing moment is a marketing touchpoint that gets photographed and shared.

Materials and Finish Considerations

Coffee brands lean heavily on kraft, uncoated, or matte finishes to signal an artisanal, small-batch positioning, often paired with a single spot-color print or a foil-stamped logo rather than full-coverage CMYK printing. If sustainability is part of your brand story, it’s worth confirming with your manufacturer whether your bag film is genuinely recyclable or compostable as claimed – barrier films marketed as “eco-friendly” vary widely in whether they’re actually processable in real-world recycling streams.

Roast Date and Origin Labeling

Beyond branding, most coffee packaging needs space for a roast date, and often origin, processing method, and tasting notes, which is worth planning into your box or bag layout from the start rather than squeezing it in as a small sticker later. If you sell into the EU or UK, food contact material documentation for anything touching the beans directly – the bag’s inner layer, not the outer box – is worth confirming with your supplier ahead of your first order.
