Sourcing custom packaging from China can save 40–70% compared to domestic manufacturers in Europe or North America. But choosing the wrong supplier can cost more than the savings — in delays, quality failures, and damaged brand reputation. This guide covers what to look for, what to avoid, and the right questions to ask.
1. Verify They Are a Factory, Not a Trading Company
Many suppliers on Alibaba are trading companies — they act as intermediaries between you and an actual factory. This adds cost, reduces transparency, and slows down communication. Always ask for factory photos, production videos, and business license documentation. A genuine manufacturer will have their factory address, production line photos, and staff on site.
2. Check Certifications
For European and North American markets, the following certifications matter: ISO 9001 (quality management system), FSC (Forest Stewardship Council — required by many EU retailers for paper products), and BSCI (Business Social Compliance Initiative — labour and social standards audit). Ask for current certificates, not scanned copies — verify them directly with the issuing body.
3. Request a Physical Sample Before Committing
Never place a production order without a physical sample. A reputable manufacturer will offer a free white (unprinted) structural sample so you can confirm dimensions, material quality, and construction. For printed samples, a small sample fee is normal — this should be refunded when you place a production order.
4. Understand Their Lead Times Honestly
Standard lead times from Chinese packaging manufacturers: white samples 5–10 days, printed samples 10–15 days, production orders 25–40 days. Be wary of suppliers who promise unrealistically short lead times. Factor in Chinese public holidays — Chinese New Year typically shuts factories for 2–4 weeks in January or February.
5. Assess Communication Quality Early
How a supplier communicates during the quotation process tells you everything about how they will communicate during production. Do they respond within 24 hours? Do they ask clarifying questions to understand your brief? Do they provide structured quotes with itemised costs? Poor communication at the quotation stage will not improve once you have paid a deposit.
6. Clarify MOQ and Pricing Structure
Minimum order quantities (MOQ) for custom rigid boxes from Chinese manufacturers typically start at 500–1,000 units. Be specific about what is included in the quoted price: does it include inner inserts? Are there tooling or dieline setup fees? What are the costs for additional colour variants?
