Custom packaging cost is built from several independent factors — material, structure, printing, finish, inserts, tooling and volume — and understanding how each one moves the price lets you evaluate quotes properly and decide where to spend versus where to save. Here’s what actually drives custom packaging pricing.
Material: Board Type and Thickness
Greyboard (used in rigid boxes) is priced by thickness and density, with heavier board costing more but giving a more substantial, premium feel. Folding cartons use SBS art board or kraft board, which is generally cheaper than rigid greyboard construction. The wrap paper or printed liner applied over the board is a separate cost line, and specialty papers (textured, metallic, uncoated) cost more than standard coated stock.
Structure Complexity
A simple lift-off lid box is one of the least expensive rigid structures to produce. Printing: Color Count and Method

Finishes Add Cost in Layers
Matte or gloss lamination is the baseline cost most boxes already include. Foil stamping, embossing, debossing and spot UV are each added processes with their own tooling and labor cost, and combining several finishes on one box (for example, foil stamping plus embossing) compounds the cost rather than simply adding it once. Inserts
An insert is effectively a second manufactured component inside the box, with its own material and tooling cost. Foam inserts are typically the least expensive to tool; molded pulp and vacuum-formed plastic inserts cost more upfront in tooling but can be more efficient at higher volumes. Die-cutting molds and any custom insert tooling are one-time costs, separate from the per-unit price of the box itself. Beyond spreading tooling cost, larger orders also get better per-unit material and labor pricing from the factory, since production runs more efficiently at scale. This means the same box design can have a meaningfully different per-unit price at 1,000 units versus 10,000 units, independent of any material or finish changes.
Shipping Is a Separate Line Item
The factory unit price is not the full landed cost of your packaging. How to Control Cost Without Cutting Quality
- Reuse an existing die-line or structure across product lines instead of tooling a new one for every SKU.
- Limit finishes to one or two that matter most for brand perception rather than combining several.
- Choose CMYK over Pantone where exact spot-color match isn’t essential to the brand.
- Order at a volume that clears the next pricing tier rather than just under it, if cash flow allows.
- Ask suppliers to itemize tooling, unit price and finish add-ons separately so quotes are genuinely comparable.
